Walking is something most of us do without giving much thought to. We have simply used it as a means of self-transportation since we were able to take those first few steps when we were toddlers. Walking quickly turns to running when we are children. I can still remember many times my brother and I being told by our parents in certain settings to WALK…DON’T RUN! Unfortunately, as we get older most of us spend less time running and walking around and more time being sedentary due to responsibilities in life such as school and work. But the good news is if you are looking for a free, natural, and great way to get moving again and better your health, walking, especially outside, can be your answer. Here are a few reasons why walking is so good for us.
Walking Burns Calories.
How many calories you actually burn will of course depend on your intensity and duration, but we all know that regular calorie burning can help us maintain or even lose a little weight.
Boosts Your Mood
Walking, especially outside in nature, has been shown to lift your mood, and help reduce anxiety.
Increase Your Energy
Walking helps to get your blood and oxygen flowing, which helps increase your energy level.
Strengthen Your Muscles
Walking can obviously help strengthen your legs, but you also will engage your core and even your arms if you get them pumping!
Good For Your Joints
Walking helps to strengthen your bones and joints by helping to circulate oxygen, joint fluid, and nutrients.
Sleep Better
Studies have shown that walking can help reduce insomnia for some people.
Live A Longer Life
Research has shown that people who are active and engage in exercise regularly live longer. Who wouldn’t want that!
I have enjoyed walking outdoors year-round for many years now. Our dog Jersey is 13yrs old and we have logged many miles together, (along with our late Beagle, Blue) in those years. I love the peace and quiet of being in nature and away from everything else. I hope you find that you enjoy it as well.
Have a great day!
